Our clients include homeowner associations, residential and commercial condominium and townhome associations, housing cooperatives, development and master planned communities, planned unit developments and others. Our clients range in size from less than one hundred to thousands of owners and many of these associations have common amenities such as multiple pools, extensive fitness facilities, tennis courts, golf courses, parks and more. These organizations have unique financial reporting requirements and tax compliance concerns and AJC’s extensive experience with CIRAs has made us a leader in this industry.
AJC is comprised of highly responsive, dedicated professionals with decades of experience in the CIRA industry. Tim serves as a Senior Assurance Manager at AJC. In that position, he performs and manages assurance engagements, including compilations, reviews, and audits for clients across various industries including electric cooperatives, construction contractors, and Common-Interest Realty Associations (CIRAs). He joined AJC in 2008 following an internship at the firm after graduating from Christopher Newport University with a degree in accounting. He also earned his Master of Accountancy from Virginia Commonwealth University. Two favorite aspects of his job are adding value to the client relationships through his understanding of complex accounting issues, as well as mentoring the newer members of the AJC staff and facilitating growth in their careers. He devotes most of his off-work hours to spending time with his family and coaching local youth athletics.
A Partner at AJC, Rick helps run the Assurance Department, where he specializes in managing assurances for insurance enterprises, employee benefit plans and common interest realty associations. He joined the firm in 1996 and early on, back when AJC was a much smaller company, he worked on tax returns, audits, and bookkeeping. All of that experience helped him understand what clients need and want from their CPA firm and gave him the comprehensive knowledge to serve as a mentor for new associates as the firm grew. When he entered VCU, he initially intended to study geology. But math was in his DNA – his father was a CPA – so he earned a degree in accounting that led to a job interview with AJC, and he still remembers that he had the best feeling when he accepted the job offer. Over the years, he watched how the leaders conducted business, how they talked to clients and staff, and he believes that AJC is just like a big family. Outside of work, he enjoys many outdoor activities such as hiking and backpacking, along with annual vacations at Virginia Beach with his wife and three kids. He has done SEAL Team courses by himself and also with his daughter, and he looks forward to travel and other fun family activities.
While working in retail for several years in Roanoke, David took an H&R Block tax course that he really enjoyed and ultimately launched his career path as a tax professional. Having joined AJC in 1989 after moving to Richmond, he is responsible for organizing and preparing tax data for clients, so the firm can submit accurate and timely tax returns for individuals and business entities. Many of the clients that he works with are small businesses and he likes knowing that AJC provides them with a strong comfort level regarding their taxes so they can focus on being successful. A history major at Virginia Tech, he is an avid reader – some favorite authors are John Grisham and Linwood Barclay. Always fascinated by the pyramids and the Sphynx, he and his wife checked off a bucket list item a few years ago with a “mind-blowing” trip to Egypt.
Tom joined AJC in 2009 and is a CPA at the firm, working on tax returns for clients as well as reviewing audits for Homeowners Associations (HOAs). He gains enormous satisfaction from helping clients with their tax questions or concerns and recommending solutions that will improve their processes. He holds bachelor’s and a master’s degrees in accounting from VCU. A native of Pittsburgh, he follows the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins. An avid reader, he’s also getting back into the swing (pun intended!) of ballroom dancing, in which he used to compete. He especially enjoys smooth dancing styles, such as the waltz, foxtrot, and tango.
After graduating from the University of Mary Washington with a degree in business, John had a career in sales for eight years, which is uncommon for CPAs. As AJC’s audit area expanded, he decided to join his older brother David at the firm, who sadly passed away suddenly in May 2022. Starting as a staff accountant in 2003, John was able to utilize his unique sales experience coupled with in depth accounting experience to eventually become an Assurance Partner. In this role, he is in charge of a wide variety of assurance engagements from smaller family run businesses to billion-dollar companies. He enjoys working to ensure that all types of clients are well-served by the firm and that AJC consistently delivers a best-in-class product. He believes that having a small core leadership team at AJC is a great asset because it allows the firm to pivot quickly when needed, including acting upon input from team members. Outside of work, John enjoys music festivals, playing golf and tennis, and attending college and professional sports events with his family.

Steve is a graduate of East Carolina University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting. In addition, he is a proud 30 plus year member of the ECU Pirate Club supporting ECU athletics. Other favorite activities include staying active and playing golf.
As the President and Managing Partner of AJC, Frank has provided visionary leadership to the firm for over 30 years. Under his expert guidance, AJC has achieved steady, organic, double-digit growth for the past 20 years, and the firm has expanded from 5-6 associates when he joined in 1988 to approximately 80 associates in 2023. He is very proud that the firm serves a high-quality portfolio of clients, many of whom have been with AJC for decades and have grown their businesses with year-round support from the talented tax, audit, and assurance teams at AJC. As a high school student, he considered careers in engineering and accounting because of his aptitude for math, but ultimately knew he wanted a job with a lot of people interaction – and accounting was a great fit for that mandatory requirement. He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from VCU and also holds a master’s degree from VCU in business administration. His first employer after college was the firm’s founder, Stan Adams, who set the standard for delivering exceptional performance to clients within a family-oriented culture that AJC continues to embrace to this day. Frank’s passion to give back to others launched his longtime support of events and activities that benefit nonprofits including Special Olympics, the Bone Frog Open honoring fallen Navy SEALs, and ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation, to name a few. Throughout the year, he provides leadership to engage AJC team members in a variety of team-building initiatives to rally around these and other philanthropic interests. During his off-work hours, he enjoys playing golf with colleagues and clients. He and his family have a place at Lake Gaston, where he unwinds by wake-surfing behind their boat along with jet skiing, paddleboarding and other fun water-related activities.
As a Partner at AJC, Steve coordinates audit engagements and serves as a liaison to orchestrate all aspects of the client’s relationship with the firm. A CPA with almost 30 years of experience, he enjoys helping clients grow their businesses by providing audit, accounting, and operational insights. While earning an accounting degree from Virginia Tech, he also was a drummer in a college band. After graduating, he worked at both a local and a national CPA firm for a number of years before joining AJC in 2016. He enjoys participating in the firm’s team-building events such as golf tournaments and the AJC Olympics. In his leisure time, Steve prioritizes health and fitness activities including running and lifting weights, along with playing golf and enjoying time with his wife, son, and daughter.
